PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Overview: The Head & Neck Fellowship at the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at NYU Langone Health offers comprehensive training in advanced head and neck oncologic surgery as well as complex pedicled and microvascular reconstructive surgery, transoral robotic surgery, salivary gland surgery, endocrine surgery, and surgery for cutaneous malignancy.
Objectives: At the completion of this one year fellowship the fellow will gain the clinical knowledge and surgical skills to take care of complicated head and neck cancer patients at a tertiary referral center. Our center sees a high volume of ablative and reconstructive cases that require multidisciplinary care. Through close collaboration with our radiology, radiation oncology, medical oncology and endocrinology colleagues, the fellow will become a well rounded academic surgeon.
Strengths: The fellow will work closely with six different surgical faculty across three hospital systems. Each faculty member is dedicated to helping the fellow develop the skills needed to care for patients who require early and advanced stage head and neck oncologic and reconstructive care. The fellow will see patients and operate at the largest public hospital in New York City, Bellevue Hospital, where he/she will work up and treat patients from all parts of the world. By the end of the year, the fellow will be a finely-honed academic head and neck surgical oncologist, able to function at a high level and with experience with cutting edge technology.
Eligibility: Board eligible in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery
Fellows’ Duties/Responsibilities:
- Surgery with faculty
- Clinic with attendings’ practice and at Bellevue Head & Neck Clinic
- Resident teaching both intraoperatively and with occasional didactic
- Run a quarterly journal club
- 1-2 primary research projects
Research Opportunities: The fellow will work with faculty to identify one or two research projects to complete by the end of the year.
Supervision, Teaching & Call: The fellow will have an increasing level of autonomy as the year progresses. Still, there will be supervision at all times. The fellow will teach residents in the operating room, at the bedside, and during didactics. The fellow will be on call for patients he or she operates on, but adequate time off is given and attendings will be available as well.
