Dr Ioannis Chatzistefanou graduated from Hellenic Military School of Medical Officer Corps and 2nd of his class from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece). He trained in prestigious university hospitals in USA (University of Maryland - Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore, USA), Great Britain (University College London Hopsital, Royal London Hospital) and Greece (Αristotle University of Thesaloniki). Dr Chatzistefanou gained a Certification of Complete Training (C.C.T.) according to the European Medical Directive 2005/36/EC and a U.E.M.S. recognized qualification of the medical specialty of “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery”, after succeeding to the regional Board Exams. He is a full time attending at the 424 General Military Hospital of Thessaloniki, Greece. Besides, he is conducting private practice at the Athens Medical Center, Athens, and the Interbalkan Medical Center, Thessaloniki, Greece and he is honorary associate at the Medical school of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Division of Head and Neck Surgery).
Dr Chatzistefanou has a PhD at the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with thesis topic " The Role of Perineural Invasion in Prognosis and Treatment Decisions in Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma". The research project is conducted in association with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA. Dr Chatzistefanou has also carried out significant research, with several publications (pubmed) and presentations at international and regional scientific conferences. Moreover he is member of the Editorial Board in international journals (USA).
During his training, Dr Chatzistefanou gained valuable and international experience in various topics of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including Oral/ Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction, Skin Cancer, Face Deformity, Cleft Lip/ Palate, Maxillofacial Trauma, Temporomandibular joint disorders, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Microneurosurgery. He also attended several training courses in USA and Europe, including the "Practical Microvascular Surgery Course" at the University of Liverpool, with course directors Prof. J. Brown and Prof. R. Shaw. Dr Chatzistefanou is a member of American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), European Association for Cranio Maxillo-Facial Surgery (EACMFS), British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).
As an Officer at the Hellenic Army Medical Corps, he has participated in the N.A.T.O. peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (K-Force), while he is contributing as a quest instructur at the Multinational Peace Support Operations Training Center - N.A.T.O. (Greece).
Dr Chatzistefanou is also the National Cordinador, together with Prof. Alexander Rapidis, of the Hellenic actions within the framework of the "27th July - World Head and Neck Cancer Day", a worldwide campaing that is conducted under the banner of the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies (IFHNOS) and the central coordination of Prof. J. Shah (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA).
