I specialize in the surgical management of benign and malignant conditions of the head and neck region as well as reconstruction following oncologic surgery. I use both open and minimally invasive techniques including transoral robotic surgery (TORS), transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) and endoscopic skull base surgery.
As a fellowship-trained head and neck surgical oncologist and microvascular reconstructive surgeon I believe that best outcomes are achieved in multidisciplinary settings. Here at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey we have assembled a team of talented surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists to provide the best head and neck cancer care possible. Equally important is the team of speech therapists, audiologists, nutritionists, nurses, social workers, and physical and occupational therapists that are an integral part of modern complex cancer care. Every patient is unique and treatment recommendations are made following tumor board discussions involving all relevant specialties. Importantly, our patients have access to resources of the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey and with that, patients can elect to participate in trials of the newest therapies and procedures.
After obtaining my medical degree at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, I completed residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Hospital in Dallas, one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the United States. Following residency, I pursued additional specialized training in head and neck oncologic, skull base and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Alabama Medical Center. I am board certified in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery.
Prior to going to medical school, I trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine. This additional training gives me a unique perspective on conditions of the maxillofacial region. I have also completed a research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute where I studied immunology of graft versus host disease and stem cell transplantation. This research culminated in a number of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. My current research interests are in immunotherapy of head and neck cancer and I am involved in development and implementation of clinical trials focusing on immunotherapy and other novel approaches to treatment of head and neck cancer.
