Dr. Amy Hessel is a Professor of Head & Neck Surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Florida School of Medicine and completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Houston Medical School and her Head and Neck Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer. Currently, her clinical practice currently focuses on the management of oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, salivary gland, skin and thyroid malignancies.
In her research program, Dr. Hessel has completed an Oral Cavity Quality Measures Project. She also is the lead for a department-wide Quality Improvement process involving reducing clinical variations and overuse of resource. She has presented at national meetings regarding Quality and Safety. She served as the Chair of the AHNS Quality committee for 2 years and sits on a variety of institutional as well as national committee. She has been an active member of the Advanced Training Council for the American Head and Neck Society, and this year was promoted to a 3-year term as Vice Chairman. Lastly, she is a senior examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology where she is actively involved the resident board certification process.
Currently, Dr. Hessel is heading up several projects on the inpatient and perioperative care of the complex head and neck surgical patients. Currently, she is on the MDACC Operating room committee and is the Inpatient medical director for the HNS and PRS unit. With these positions, she is overseeing the daily operations of the head and neck surgical service from peri-operative to post-operative environments. Within the Head and Neck Surgery department, she has been awarded the Director of the Clinical Operations Leadership Team where she has been overseeing the various divisions within the department in order to optimize patient care, prevent redundancy and provide resources for process improvement. In addition, Dr. Hessel has been the director of the MD Anderson Head and Neck Surgical Oncology fellowship since 2005. She has overseen the training and career development of over 45 head and neck surgeons over the past 13 years.
